Pella couple celebrates 67th wedding anniversary
SANDRIDGE Mr. and Mrs. Jacob F. Van Gorp of 1313 Main Street marked their sixty seventh wedding anniversary on March 14. They wed on March 14, 1899, amid heavy mud and poor roads, with the minister braving the farm drive to join them. Mrs. Van Gorp recovered from a hip fracture in 1950 and uses a walker. Mr. Van Gorp, now 90, has weathered two ladder accidents and remains active. Their long marriage endures despite health and injury trials.

Bride and Groom Wed in Their Own Farm Home
The Pell Chronicle recounts Jake Van Gorp and Mattie Mulder’s marriage at their 172 acre Mahaska county farm near Warren bridge. After a muddy preacher’s outfit was cleaned, the ceremony proceeded at about 2 PM with family witnesses. They honeymooned on the farm, which sits near the Red Rock dam site, and plan to sell to ease responsibilities. The article highlights the couple’s long residence, Mrs Van Gorp’s extensive crochet and quilt work for Tulip Time, and the couple’s simple life with a kitchen stocked by 60 dollars in 1899 and a fond memory of their first home furnishings.
