Petra the Strangest City Carved in Stone in History

Garrett P. Serviss describes Petra as the strangest city in the world, carved from solid rock in a desert valley. Once wealthy and known in Bible times, it was conquered by Romans, later abandoned, and forgotten for 1500 years until Burckhardt rediscovered it in 1812. The canyon houses temples, tombs, and dwellings cut into cliffs, with the treasury temple to Isis and rich Corinthian details, amid barren mountains and wolves, hyenas, and venomous snakes in the ruins.
