Last Civil War Veteran of Pella Reaches 84th Birthday
Arie Van Marel, Pella’s sole remaining Civil War veteran, turned 84 on March 6 at his East Second street home. Feeble for months, he enjoyed visits from friends, including American Legion members, and two sons from Sioux County who joined the celebration. Enlisting at seventeen in Company C, 15th Iowa Infantry, he served through campaigns in the Mississippi Valley and Gulf states, later returning to Pella, then Sioux County, and finally back to Pella about twenty years ago. He remained a faithful G A R member as the organization dwindled to him alone.
