Fire Alarm Hits Van Rees Pool Hall
A Wednesday evening blaze was detected between 9 30 and 10 00 near the Van Rees pool hall on the south side of the square. The fire appeared to start in the basement burning a hole about five feet across. Damage was not serious as firefighters arrived promptly and put out the flames. The origin is unknown but may have been caused by a match or cigar stub that fell through a floor hole into the basement, where stored combustible trash perhaps existed.
