Kitty Gray, a newspaper woman, discovers half a broken coin with a mutilated inscription. At her editor's order she travels to Gretzhoffen to unravel the story the inscription hints at, with pursuers in pursuit as she begins her adventures.
Kitty Gray and Rolan plot to seize the Gretzhoffen half coin from Count Frederick aboard a moving train. Frederick and Kitty strike a temporary alliance to outwit Bartel of Grahoffen, while Roleau guards the coin. They intend to flee toward the mountains as Grahoffen forces close in.
A Grahoffen court official pursues Bartel and party after murder is suspected. Rolan deflects the chase by collapsing a mountain bridge with a massive blow, sending pursuers into the stream. The fugitives push on toward safety as mounted riders close in from below.
In Gretzhoffen the king orders the guard to march after a ransom of news and a fabled Gretzhoffen coin as Count Frederick and Rolan hold a mountain pass. Kitty Gray braves the palace to bring word of a border war at the neutral lands and a peaceful parley ends the standoff with half the coin secured.
Kitty Gray explores rumored subterranean vaults beneath the Gretzhoffen palace seeking truth amid old legends. She discovers a hidden door and a dusty iron key, entering a chamber that fills her with mortal terror as the scene ends.
