Nitrogen rates for Iowa corn by side dressing

An agronomist notes how soils in eastern and western Iowa respond to nitrogen applied as side-dressing. Profitable results come from 40 to 60 pounds per acre on light sandy soils, equivalent to 120 to 180 pounds of ammonium nitrate, while 20 to 30 pounds often yields better returns on nitrogen-deficient soils. Adjust rates to stand condition. side-dressing remains the only viable method for this year’s crop.

Remove Apple or Cedar Trees to Stop Rust

Ard en F Sherf of Iowa State College describes cedar rust requires both cedars and nearby apple trees. He advises removing all cedars and apples within a mile if practical, or at least removing galls on small cedars or spraying apples with Fermate before rains to reduce rust. Rust on cedars appears as brown galls with orange gelatin fingers, spreading to apples as orange cushions on undersides of leaves.

Side-Dressing of Corn Best Done in June

Iowa State College agronomist I B Cheney urges farmers to side-dress corn with nitrogen in June to correct deficiencies and boost yields. He notes better responses when rainfall is adequate and that second-year corn or land lacking prior manure shows strong responses, with timing critical for best results.

Corn and Cob Meal On New Grass For Calves

Iowa State College expert Rex Beresford advises cattlemen to use corn and cob meal with high moisture pasture in summer as it reduces scattering and may boost gains compared with shelled corn. If corn is unavailable, whole oats should make up 10 to 12 percent of calf rations. To prevent spring pasture bloat, feed all grain during turnout.

Feeding cattle on pasture and supplement use guidance

Beresford advises starting with at least half the prior supplement when cattle are turned out to graze and pasture quality rises. As grass becomes wooly and coarse, raise supplement back to hay levels. Early summer pasture with supplement may not boost profits but can speed finish and enable earlier market readiness.
