Fire consumes Central University building at Pella
Des Moines papers recount the 1863 Central University of Iowa in Pella burning, noting the 1855 brick structure built with local materials, its Baptist origin, later reorganizations into Central college and Des Moines University, and the wartime enlistments memorialized by a marble slab that perished in the blaze. The story also covers Siberian Veterans group formation, local veteran leaders, and regional land values declines versus neighboring states.
