Ordinary tobacco box saved from 1881 warehouse fire
In Slob Rye a plain tobacco box, used for sage tobacco, survived a September 1881 fire that destroyed the Slob store building. Den Hoedt, father of Mrs. E Groenendyk, rescued the box from flames to prevent loss of the handy receptacle, which has stood on the store counter for 45 years despite fire damage. The piece is dented and worn yet remains in service alongside other saved items, including a cupboard of dishes.
