Organic Matter In Soil Vital to Good Crop Yield
A Iowa State College study by Marvin Anderson shows that cultivated soils lose organic matter, become compact, and hold less water. Virgin soils weigh less per cubic foot than cultivated soils, with increases of about 14 to 20 pounds after cultivation. The report urges regular inclusion of grasses and legumes in crop rotation to sustain soil health and crop yields.
