National Spelling Contest Trip Details and Iowa Champion
Monday morning assembly honored Marilla as state spelling champion with a hydrangea presentation by Superintendent Buerkens. Preparations for the May 29 Washington D C national contest included sessions with Miss Spence and Mrs Bud Vander Ploeg, coach Marilla with Marlene Sells, and travel companions Mr and Mrs Vander Meulen and Mr and Mrs Vern Allan. The 1977 national contest at the National Press Club drew 94 contestants. Marilla spelled 18 words correctly before missing desiccate, amid a list including nickelodeon and hyacinth. Mattie Lou Pollard of Georgia won the title. Marilla received a $50 prize. The Iowa group toured Mt Vernon and other sites before returning to Des Moines.

Pella would share federal transit funds for senior programs
The Christian Opportunity Center of Pella among 18 Iowa groups to receive Urban Mass Transportation Act funds. The UMTA will cover 80 percent of 410200 dollars. recipients cover the rest. Five school buses and 19 vans will aid elderly and handicapped transport, coordinated with state transit systems under Regional Transit Development Programs. DOT will monitor recipient performance.

Two Pella Men Enroll In ISU Agricultural Credit School
Two men from Pella banks attend the 32nd annual agricultural credit school at Iowa State University in Ames. Larry Van Zante of Pella National Bank and Howard Pethoven of Marion County State Bank are both first year enrollees. The school offers four weeks of instruction over two years on farm related credit and topics, said Everett Stoneberg, ISU extension farm management specialist and director.

Pella Sand and Gravel seeks DM River dredging permit
Pella Sand and Gravel applied for a Department of the Army permit to dredge a large sandbar on the Des Moines River near Pella. About 10 surface acres will be dredged to four to five feet deep, up to 16 feet at maximum, using portable equipment with no permanent structures. Objects include a dragline and bull dozers. Objections or comments due by July 10 to the Rock Island District Corps of Engineers.
