Want Detasselers To Register at the Employment Office
The Knoxville Iowa State Employment Service reports May placements at 20 nonagricultural and 3 agricultural jobs, with 5 of the nonagricultural workers being women. Industries for men include apparel, railroads, wholesale trade, private government establishments, and insurance. women enter insurance, private households, and government offices. Also, five were sent to Maytag in Newton and four of these men were hired. May visits totaled 957 with 47 layoffs, mainly from coal mining, and a noted shortage of detasseling interest among youths. The Knoxville office urges juniors and seniors to register for detasseling corn this summer.

Thieves Enter Hatchery Steal Tools at Taintor Hatchery
Thieves entered the A. D. Hull turkey hatchery at Taintor on Thursday night June 8 and escaped with more than 400 dollars worth of goods. Investigators Deputy Sheriff Rodney Keeppel and state agent Del Murray said entry was gained through an unlocked rear window. The two steel cabinets held two sets of tools valued at 125 dollars each.

Timing clocks and equipment stolen from hospital office
