Eight Iowa Farmers Grow Tobacco As Commercial Crop
The Iowa Development Commission reports that eight Iowa farmers grew tobacco in 1954, totaling twelve acres with a yield of 16,986 pounds. The crop, though small versus corn and soybeans, rose 24 percent since 1949, and a Fort Madison manufacturer sells cigars and smoking tobacco from Iowa. Three of four traffic accidents occur in clear dry weather.

Rose diseases and control measures outlined by plant pathologist
Plant pathologist Malcolm Shurtleff of Iowa State College details two major rose diseases black spot and powdery mildew. Black spot causes defoliation and cankers, controllable by regular sprays from late May at 7 to 14 day intervals. powdery mildew affects climbers and ramblers with white patches and distortion, controllable by sprays or sulfur when first mildew appears. He emphasizes following label directions and removing diseased rose debris in fall to prevent overwintering pathogens.
