William J. Driver, VA Administrator, told a house sub committee that the cost of boosting vocational rehabilitation and war orphans education aid would run about 23.5 million dollars over five years. He also urged a ten year extension of the vocational training deadline to aid long term psychiatric patients and others with severe disabilities. Previously he pressed for a 130 million dollar annual rise in service disability compensation and a 20 percent boost for vocational rehabilitation allowances.
The Veterans Administration joins President Johnson’s summer job drive to create 500000 opportunities. Dr H J Madsen of the Knoxville VA Hospital says the agency will hire 12 youths under the program. Vice President Humphrey directs the youth opportunity program with cooperation sought from governments and private groups.
The nation reports over a million pieces of mail sent as pledges of cooperation pour in. State employment offices will serve as focal points for filling employer needs by linking youth with work and training opportunities and supplying information on the program.
The General Accounting Office reports the Post Office sold printed envelopes below cost and used improper cost allocations, estimating a four year loss of about 7.5 million dollars. GAO cites accounting errors and the need for new procedures while Congress overlooks action. Tax levels and postal rate hikes are questioned by critics.
