The Marion County soils program reports 80,618 acres under full enlistment with 6,635 new acres added this year. Contour farming, terraces, and ponds improve land use, boosting pasture and crop yields while urging remaining farmers to join the effort during Soil Conservation Week proclaimed by Governor Blue.
The scene shows Don Dyer and Dale Co surveying a contour corn planting on the Dyer farm east of Pleasantville. The field is broken from red ver and timothy sod, rotated two years corn and oats, then two years lespume grass meadow, highlighting well grassed waterways as essential for sloping fields.
Howard and Grant Core farm highlights seven years of soil conservation yielding top county production. Their Tandars rotation includes corn oats and alfalfa brome with fields producing over 100 bushels per acre recently. Beef and pork output exceeds 100 pounds per farm unit, egg production strong, and poultry meat sales not counted.
A mounted hydraulic lift on a tractor is used in corn planting at the Kutert Biller farm northwest of Knoxville. Harry Brevenwr sits on the tractor as locals note loose soil listing is a relatively new county practice with promising results from last year’s contour trials.
Emerson Red Clover, a new variety, is shown in a Marion County field. Charley Stierwalt Idris Martin Clay Barnett stand amid tall clover as Ames College aids seed production. Bees will assist seed set. Soil conservation tours and church programs are planned for June 10 as part of Soil Conservation Week coordinated by Iowa State Extension and several state and county agencies.
Gov. Robert D. Blue proclaims Iowa Soil Conservation Week stressing the value of fertile soil to the state’s economy and social structure. The message warns that erosion and soil depletion threaten farmers and state purity, urging citizen focus on soil preservation and restoration efforts.
Radio stations will carry programs from town service clubs built around a soil conservation theme. 4-H Club and other rural youth groups will incorporate conservation activities into their programs as part of current plans.
More than 60 tons of clothing and emergency supplies arrived on Luzon in the first shipment toward nearly one million garments planned for the Philippines by the American Red Cross. Distribution began immediately.
The Red Cross is extending aid to civilian and military casual ties, liberated prisoners of war and civilian internees, and to civilian non casualties upon Army recommendation. Additional Red Cross supplies for civilians are being shipped from the United States at the request of military authorities.
