Garden tips from Vance on fertilizing beans asparagus cucumbers and houseplants
Practical horticultural notes advise using complete fertilizer at 2 pounds per 100 feet for beans and 2 pounds per 100 square feet for asparagus after harvest, with trenches set 4 inches apart and 1 inch deeper than seed. Cut asparagus tops to ground level when leafy growth appears and harvest ends by mid June in central Iowa. Cucumbers may be planted through late June with heat aiding growth, suggesting icebox varieties for northern Iowa. Houseplants can be moved outdoors by burying pots and leaving half inch of pot showing, with ashes under pots to prevent root crowding, while tropicals need sun scald protection.

Feed Grain Payments Count as Earnings for Farmers
Farm operators and participating landlords must include feed grain payments in earnings reported on income tax returns. Through these returns they pay Social Security tax on net profit to be credited to individual Social Security accounts. Federal feed grain program payments also count as earnings for the retired farmer already receiving old-age insurance benefits. About 350 million Americans are infected with TB germs.
