Harold Ver Meer Milks 70 Cow Dairies Into Modern Grade A System
Harold Ver Meer of Route 2 Pelafi operates a 70 cow dairy that has milked since 1945. An early advocate for Grade A milk, he helped create a Des Moines market and earned his Grade A license in 1953 with support from the Des Moines Department of Health and the Des Moines Coop. He upgraded in 1959 to a 625 gallon bulk tank and now milks 40 cows in a five stall U shaped parlor, using a Surge mixer and vacuum delivery. Cows are Holstein bred, calves kept for herd replacement, and milk is preferred over replacer.

Lawmakers consider extendible feed grain bill with soy option
Iowa officials described a subcommittee approved measure extending the Feed Grain Program through 1969. The plan allows farmers to swap part of their feed grain base from corn to soybeans if the Agriculture Secretary deems soybean production needed. The change would not reduce the 20 cent per bushel price support and preserves wheat substitution on the base.
