Reformed Church Increases Pensions For Retired Clergy
The General Synod of the Reformed Church in America boosted monthly pensions for retired ministers from 50 to 75 dollars and hopes to reach 100. The pension fund covers 128 ministers plus 116 widows and 15 orphans, with an Annuity Fund funded by 3 percent from ministers and 8 percent from local churches. The Gould family donated Kirk side in Roxbury as a home for retirees, opened April 1 under Rev Anthony Van Westenburg. Synod reaffirms membership in the Federal Council and moves toward the National Council of Churches in the USA, with eight month budgets for the next year. A resolution urged Truman and the State Department to send a representative or ambassador to the Vatican, and ministers were assigned to overseas observances and meetings in London and the Netherlands.
