Exports Increase But Farm Incomes Are Still Dropping

Farm incomes fell from July 1955 to May 1956 despite a 9 percent rise in exports for that period versus the prior year. Economist Francis A. Kutish notes fats and oils surged due to European olive oil crop damage and currency sale rules, while overall export boosts stem from foreign demand and government programs. Cotton led a decline, then began to move as CCC export programs resumed. Farm exports excluding cotton in the last year are likely higher than any 30 year span.
