Amendments to Social Security Law in Effect
About 64 000 Iowa residents will receive higher social security payments as a result of amendments signed into law by President Truman. The first increased checks will arrive for September, delivered in October. Leo W. Smith of Des Moines Social Security Administration says no one need apply, as the agency is already adjusting amounts. The changes introduce a new formula, with most families seeing about a five dollar increase, though some will vary. The reform also raises the income limit for earnings while receiving benefits to 75 dollars monthly starting September 1 1962, and allows self employed retirees to count yearly earnings for benefit calculations. Some 1952 retirees may reapply after year end calculations.
