Summer Freshness in a Tall Cool Drink
Summer heat brings ice and chilled beverages. Nutritionists advise fruit juices over plain drinks, with tart additions like lemons and rhubarb for tang. Start with lemonade, add berries, strain seeds, and consider egg lemonade variations. Prepare sugar syrup to mix evenly, and use nonreactive containers. Cold milk drinks with fruit boost nutrition for adults and children.

Prepare Fields Now for Seeding Alfalfa-Brome
County Extension Director E M Sutton urges farmers planning fall seeding of brome grass and alfalfa to secure seed now and keep ground weed free. Harvesting of brome is underway in Nebraska and western Iowa, with certified Lincoln and Fischer varieties preferred. Downy brome avoidance is advised, while alfalfa seed remains scarce. sowing should occur mid August or after, at ten pounds per acre for each seed. Disk fields after harvest and repeat diskings to suppress weeds and preserve moisture.

Horses to meat supply eyed to ease famine abroad
The text notes 200000 horses could yield about 100 million pounds of edible meat to aid starving regions. It contrasts farmers receiving nothing for animals dying on farms with payments of $1.60 to $2.00 per hundred pounds for old horses and mules sold for slaughter, implying slaughter cost from $4.00 to $3.50 per hundredweight.
