Eight Are Killed in Powder Turret Explosion Aboard Georgia
Boston July 16. A naval tragedy off Barnstable Cape Cod Bay left seven officers and fifteen sailors dead or dying after an explosion of powder in the Georgia after turret during target practice. Lieutenant Goodrich, Faulkner Goldthwaite, and others perished or died in hospital as the ship reached Charleston navy yard. Two theories linger on the cause: a discharged gun spark igniting powder or a spark from the smokestacks drifting into the turret.
