W R Mike Edwards is named night marshal to succeed Aaron Bailey murdered with Sheriff Fred Sweet on June 26. Edwards took office Tuesday after swearing in earlier. Mayor Applegate appointed him, pending council ratification. He previously worked at George Teas blacksmith shop and has run for county sheriff.

Thieves Take Four Jersey Cows From Jackson County Farm
Four Jersey cows were stolen last week from Miles & White near Jacksonville Missouri. A truck was used to load the cows from a pasture a mile south of town and the vehicle was traced to Highway 63. No arrests or clues have been reported, and this marks a rare cattle theft in the area amid prior thefts of poultry and hogs.

Grinnell Attorney Fined For Bad Checks
B C Engle of Newton, an attorney, was arrested in Grinnell on bad checks. He paid a $10 fine, had no money and stayed three days in jail. Iowa City authorities later sent for him to answer further charges. He faces more charges in Grinnell for checks under ten dollars.

Newton boy dragged to death by mule on farm
Richard Wirts eight stepson of James Hannagan of Newton was killed near Red Oak on a farm owned by Walter Johnson. He tied reins to his waist while helping move mules with a neighbor boy. The mule frightened and dragged him to death as Mr Hannagan and his wife and young son visited the farm for the Fourth.

Coroner Reports 27 Deaths in Three Years in Keokuk County
Since 1927 Coroner Harry Reynolds has investigated twenty seven deaths including seven suicides twelve accidents and eight natural causes.
