Plan shifts freeway 592 route away from Des Moines
The Iowa Department of Transportation rerouted proposed freeway 592 from Des Moines toward Burlington, moving it south of the current 92 corridor from Knoxville to Oskaloosa toward Albia. The agency cites traffic to Rathbun Lake and land taken from production along the southern path, but critics argue the northern route should have been considered first as construction continues from Harvey to Knoxville. Heavy trucks may increase through Pella, and 163 would remain the main Des Moines to Mississippi river route until 592 is built in seven to ten years.

Fire destroys Farmers Co op Elevator at Monroe
In 1967 a blaze leveled the Farmers Co op Elevator in Monroe. Firefighters from Monroe, Newton, Colfax, Knoxville and Pella battled the flames as work on Red Rock dam neared three quarters completion. Boyd W. Boehlje joined Gaass and Klyn after earning his juris doctor from Town University.

Reconstruction reshapes rural education after 1918 fire
A Whe Gton Hed and Yeenouett school were destroyed by fire about 1918, along with a nearby church. During rebuilding rural schools were reactivated after closures around 1924, filling the gap until later reforms. A four room building near the road to Sully and Tainter was removed. State wide reorganization in 1957 redirected students to Pella or Sully.

Republican state chairman Steve Roberts urged a vigorous campaign to retire Rep. Bill Dieleman of Pella in 1978. Two accidents in Pella last week led to charges. Rosa Van Wyk of New Sharon faced improper backing after attempting to exit an angled parking space on Franklin Street Northwest. her vehicle struck Keith and Katherine Roozeboom of Pella causing 400 dollars in damage. Ann Vermeer of Pella, driving Elmer Vermeer’s car, failed to yield while turning left from 163 onto E 10th, forcing Elaine Roose of Pella into the ditch and causing 850 dollars in damage.

A 1912 photo by the Oskaloosa Daily Herald shows 19 pupils and teacher Mary Allgood in front of the Fleming school in Mahaska county about 2½ miles north of Peoria. Nine students share the Fleming name. the old building has been moved, a newer one erected around 1920.
