L B Hoopes of Muscatine outlines a home method for drying peas on the farm. Drying replaces canning to save tin containers and storage space while preserving flavor and color. Pick peas green, leave pods on to dry on a screen, in shade with air circulation, then shell and store in a dry ventilated place. Soak a few hours before cooking.
The home economics division at Iowa State College warns that 12 to 20 infants per hundred die in their first year, mostly in warm months. Proper care and feeding prevent most summer infant sickness and deaths caused by improper foods.
The text warns that infection risk from Germs is highest in milk used for babies. It recommends mothers’ milk when possible and describes cleaning, storage, and warming practices. If using substitute milk, ensure source and treatment, prepare daily portions, or pasteurize at home using a water bath method.
