Pella Canning Plant Near Completion Amid War Efforts

A new corn canning plant in Pella Iowa rises on former sports ground along the Rock Island line. The two story building covers about two thirds of an acre and will employ about 150 workers at capacity. The project is part of a national push to boost food production during wartime, with support from the Grimes and Perry plants and local contractors Chas Lautenbach and James Verhey. Farmers nearby have planted hundreds of acres of sweet corn to feed the effort, despite bad seed and floods. The opening is expected around mid August, aligning with the canning season and a broader push to feed the world.
