Old Des Moines River bridge to be rebuilt with iron spans
Des Moines county supervisors authorize nearly complete rebuilding of the Pella bridge over the Des Moines river on the Knoxville to Pella route. Four new iron spans replace weakened timber, leaving two old spans. The project includes a 150 foot span and three 100 foot spans, with repairs dating to 1879 80 and earlier assessments from 1865. A vote on paving the square district with creosoted blocks is set for Friday August 9 after a four to one council decision.

Knoxville Adopts Creosoted Block Paving Plan
At a Friday council meeting Knoxville decided to pave around the public square and along Main Street to the high school with creosoted wood blocks on a five inch concrete base. Citizens debated cost and longevity, with L N Hays urging blocks as cheaper long term and brick supporters noting brick’s proven durability elsewhere. The discussion ended with Alder Bybee introducing a paving resolution.
