Chinch Bugs Ravage Corn Across South Iowa County
State Entomologist Dr. Carl J. Drake reports chinch bugs severely damage corn in many areas of south and southwest Iowa. Mark G. Thornburg commends resin paper creosote barriers that have saved corn, with five cars of creosote distributed to farmers. Counties most affected include Guthrie, Page, Cass, Mills, Marion, Pottawattamie, Decatur, Fremont and Montgomery, with Story County the northern limit of demand. Green oat growth from recent rains may delay pest migration, but expected corn yield losses remain significant in infested zones.
