Sheep Men May Change Rations to Stretch Hay Supply
Weather has slashed Marion County hay stocks prompting Ex tension Director Richard Freeman to propose three sheep rations. Ration One uses legume hay with corn cob, soybean meal, and supplements. Ration Two blends ground cobs, molasses, soybean meal, alfalfa meal and minerals. Ration Three produces a complete pellet mix with cob, hay, meal, corn, and molasses. All plans emphasize self-feeding minerals, with shelled corn before lambing and after lambing.

Safe corn may harbor mold and insects despite moisture care
Mahaska County Extension Director Gene Reisetter cites Agricultural Engineer Larry Van Fossen of Iowa State University warning that even grain kept at safe moisture can develop mold and insect problems. Warm center moisture moves outward, attracting pests at bin edges. venting with a pipe and fan from bottom could prevent this, ideally installed before filling. Afterward, insertion is possible by removing grain as it goes in.
