Farmers Should Read Seed Test Reports for Clarity

Good Supply Alfalfa Seed Outlook From Iowa State Expert
Extension farm economist Gordon Bivens of Iowa State College advises waiting until spring before buying alfalfa seed. Seed crop totals rose nationwide with about 172 million pounds produced last year, lifting prices only modestly as markets anticipate the bumper crop. Clovers and grasses show varied declines and price shifts, with some seeds dropping since September while others rise. Bivens cautions watching markets closely to avoid higher spring prices.

Feeder Urea Mixtures Offer Cost Savings for Ruminants
Extension expert William G. Zmolek from Town State College says urea can replace other proteins to cut costs if carefully mixed with linseed oil meal or soybean oil meal. He notes safe daily intake limits, energy needs, and mineral supplements, and warns urea is for ruminants only with a tight supply due to competing plastic and fertilizer industries.
