Roger the barber notes the high hopes around Pella High boys basketball, ranked No 1 in the state. He says talent is abundant but no recruiting, so the team must handle crowds and expectations and strive to stay undefeated, with luck shaping if they falter in the regular season or in tournaments.
The Marion County Board of Supervisors vote to close or post unsafe bridges. County Engineer Abie Davis and staff receive credit for expanding farm-to-market road inspections to all bridges for safety. Public safety justifies interim disruption until repairs reach readiness.
About 300 Pella area residents attended precinct caucuses indicating strong participation. The tally favored Ford among Republicans in the straw vote, Carter drew Democratic support, with seven Republicans undecided and eight Democrats uncommitted. Seventeen delegates to Marion County Democratic Convention may remain uncommitted, showing lingering indecision or a desire for more information.
In the second week of the 66th General Assembly the focus remains on property tax study efforts led by the Ways and Means Committee. A Senate plan proposes a 6 percent annual growth limit for two years on local budgets. a public hearing is set for Wednesday at 6 30 p m with debate expected over its adoption and effectiveness.
In Des Moines Iowa Rep Bill Dieleman reports the Senate passed seven appropriation bills early and completed debate on a sexual contact for a fee ban. A Ways and Means bill limits growth for political subdivisions at six percent for 1976 and 1977 with exemptions and a county budget review panel. House actions include election law tweaks allowing earlier poll closings and resignation rules for cross-party primary winners, with upcoming debates on wine sales inheritance tax teacher insurance conscience clause and other codes.
