Free stall dairy setup on John Van Gorp Jr farm
John Van Gorp Jr, 40 miles east of Pella, rebuilt after a 1964 fire with a modern Grade A dairy. A double four stall herringbone milking parlor serves 40 cows per hour, cows in free stalls with individual self feeders, and a 310 gallon bulk tank. Cows milk together year round, with plans to grow to 35 to 40 cows. Calves kept separately. bull calves sold as vealers at age 2-3 days.

Van Gorp has lived on his family farm for more than 50 years, farming 120 acres with corn hay oats and pasture. He raises all grain, sells milk to Des Moines Coop, and his wife Dorothy manages five children Ruth 11 Sheryl 9 Johnny 7 Jimmy 4 Jana 3. Ruth was 1964 Pella Jaycee Junior Dairy Princess. Prices he says are pretty fair now.
