Corn Borer Threat Labeled Manageable In Iowa Plan
The Marion County corn borer outbreak prompts a coordinated research effort by Iowa State College’s Agricultural Experiment Station and Extension Service, the Iowa Department of Agriculture, and other agencies. Experts say resistant hybrids may develop, parasites less promising, and emphasis on practices to destroy overwintering borers, including shredding and ensiling, guiding next year’s control measures.

Corn Borer Control and Farm Adaptations Discussed

Rotations may change as Sprague Drake and others work on corn borer control and concede some level of coexistence with the pest is likely, with indications that it can be managed.

Postwar Hog Will Not Be Too Lard
Postwar hogs will favor a meatier 225 pound live weight with 10 to 12 inch side length and 14 to 15 inch back depth. Dr Lush of the regional swine breeding lab at Iowa State College and W A Craft of the U S Department of Agriculture coordinate breeding work across the Corn Belt. With lard demand waning, a taller, longer legged hog is preferred. hogs under 40 inches long may fatten excessively at 220 to 210 pounds, while 225 pound hogs with slightly shorter legs are desirable for carcass yield and producer acceptance.
