Gunderson Urged Use All Weapons on Borers

Dr Harold N Gunderson an extension entomologist urged Iowa farmers to combat corn borers with DDT along with stalk shredders and deep plowing. He advised two early field dustings on heavily infested corn 1 inch tall after 50 egg masses per 100 plants and again 7 to 10 days later to maximize yields and reduce losses. He urged early DDT orders to avoid distribution bottlenecks and cited potential yield gains of about 11 bushels per acre from two treatments totaling $14.50 to $15 per acre.
