Use of Nurse Cows on Dairy Farms Increases Calf Rearing

Dairy experts from Iowa State College report nurse cow systems raise calves with fewer illnesses and better appearance. Although pricier, the method can be practical for high value calves. A nurse cow can support four calves by yielding 8 to 10 pounds of milk daily per calf.

Calves Need Frequent Nursing and Gradual Weaning

Calves should be nursed two or more times daily, then as they are well started at about two months old they should be removed from nurse cows and bucket fed. Skim milk should continue to be fed until they reach six months of age.
