County farmers learn 90 percent calf crop profitable setup

Dr. John Herrick told 50 Marion County producers that a 90 percent calf crop and weights of 450 to 550 pounds are needed for profitability. He urged prebreeding fertility checks, culling infertile cows, and a 60 to 70 day calving period. A fall pregnancy check helps identify barren cows to cull and allows timing for other management practices. The session kicked off a four day Beef Cow and Calf School at the Maple Buffet in Knoxville.
