New Hawkeye Soybean Exceeds Expectations in 1949 Iowa tests
Hawkeye soybeans outperformed expectations in Iowa in 1949 across farms and yield tests. Averaging 31.9 bushels per acre versus Lincoln’s 31.4, Hawkeye showed regional gains, matured with similar timing, and offered higher oil content. Developed by Iowa State College agronomist C R Weber, Hawkeye gained rapid farmer acceptance, accounting for 17 percent of 1949 Iowa bean acreage and projected 15 to 30 percent growth in 1950. It is recommended to replace Richland on northern fields, increasing yields by about 5 bushels per acre and improving stand and height with fewer combine losses.
