Dixon Construction Company in Centerville, with Marion County supervisors, offers agricultural lime within five miles of the quarry at 1.25 per ton delivered. 18 workers on site, rock crushed for roads and lime, orders growing, awaiting courthouse approval for delivery and payment arrangements.
Farmers across Iowa ask C. C. Culbertson of Iowa State College about whether hybrid corn matches open pollinated varieties for feeding. He says feeding value of most hybrids appears on a par with open pollinated types, though some hard hybrids may need cracking for best results.
Medium hard shelled grains fed to livestock show similar results across hybrid and open pollinated corn. Iowa tests on pigs yielded no significant differences among kernel hardness. Local items note community gatherings, holiday visits, and a Yellowstone Park slide program at Otley schoolhouse.
Summit Mr and Mrs Peter Poland visited at Gerrit Wassen's Otley home last Friday. Otley Christian Reformed church held its annual children's program last Tuesday. Arnold Brouwer and Misses Velma Dop and Tana Van Ee joined Gerrit Brouwer for supper last Sunday. Dave Vander Ploeg and family in Long Beach California sent a rose garden note to the writer. Vander Ploeg spent Christmas with Percy Lampham in Anaheim, California. Lampham is Vander Ploeg's aunt. Several families including Van Wyk, Van Dusseldorp, and Vogelaar gathered for Christmas Day at various homes. Neal Vogelaar hosted dinner with OsKaloosa's Wilbur Vanden Noord, Clarence Vogelaar of Pella, and Elmer Vogelaar's family from Otley. Van Dusseldorp and Van Dussel dorp families visited Simon Van Dusseldorp and Artic Hien. Effie Kathryn Heemstra spent Christmas with her uncle Nick Heemstra and family cast of Pella. A large group of local youths joined Frank Aalbers at Gerrit Aalbers' home Thursday. Alenis Van Wyk visited Tunner Van Zante. Peter Breed and John Avie visited Louis Van Roel’s home with William Breed of Inwood, Iowa. Don Poortinga and Neal Heemstra hosted visitors Friday. Mrs Heemstra remains confined.
