Iowa Manufacturing Employment Surges in Midcentury Growth

Iowa industrial employment more than doubled from 1939 to 1951 with 76,815 workers in 1939 and rising payrolls. The 1950 town directory shows 151,700 manufacturing jobs and a 10 month 1951 average of 166,260. Payrolls climbed sharply as manufacturers’ share of income payments grew, boosting total Iowa income payments to $3.737 billion in 1960 and manufacturing payrolls to $485 million.
