Christian Opportunity Center Expands Foster Home Program
The Christian Opportunity Center extends its growth with a new half million building on North Broadway. Programs include preschool, academic and vocational areas, foster care expansion, and planned community housing with licensing as a placement agency. About 65 people are enrolled, with 16 school aged children in foster homes and three adults placed recently. The center also partners with Lutheran Social Services and Jaycees Park plans, and will field two Special Olympics basketball teams.

Off Campus Housing Tightens For Pella College Students
Associate Dean Marjorie Giles notes the tight off campus housing market as Central College in Pella tries to shelter about 1,109 students. A spring boarding survey guides bed predictions and a lottery assigns off campus spots starting with seniors. About 25 to 26 seniors live off campus currently, while 15 to 26 spaces remain in on campus dorms. Married students struggle for affordable options as rents rise to 150 250 dollars monthly. many live in older homes near town. With enrollment steady around 1,100 to 1,200, 147 commute from Pella areas, and no major building plans planned due to birth-rate driven decline foreseen into the 1980s.

Gas Main Extensions Continue In Pella Growth Plan
The Iowa Electric Light and Power Co plan extends and replaces gas mains to meet Pella’s growth. Projects include 1355 feet of two inch main on North Main to Parkview, a regulator station on South Street, 440 feet of two inch main on Huber Street, 20 feet on West Third, cathodic protection, and prior year work such as 2000 feet on West Third Brentwood Parkview Drive, Park Lane Drive, and Oskaloosa Street tie-ins.
