The Senate attended funeral services for Senator Burrows in Belle Plaine Iowa on Monday February 15 after his death the previous Thursday. House File No 8 to abolish the Death Penalty advanced after a long debate finishing 35 to 20. A tax bill on Fraternal Beneficial Associations passed after amending to exclude small life policies. The Legislature plans a recess February 27 to March 8 and the writer, appointed to a State Agriculture Department investigation, aims to improve the department without discrediting loyal staff. The Pella police reported $184 total damages from a two-vehicle accident caused in part by icy streets. Roger D. Engelkes of rural Dike slid his southbound vehicle in an alley near Central College, about 100 feet north of University street, colliding with a parked car owned by Thomas Case of Pella. The Case car sustained $100 damage and Engelkes’ own car $84. Police Chief Robert Houser investigated and no charges were filed.
