Oskaloosa Woman Hurt in Highway 163 Accident

Mrs. Oscar Swan, 29, of Oskaloosa, was hospitalized with injuries after the car she rode in skidded on ice and overturned on Highway 163 about 11 miles northwest of Oskaloosa at 6 a.m. Deputy Homer Gerard said Bob Fortney drove the vehicle. Fortney and two male passengers escaped injury. They were bound for work at Newton.

Winners in 4-H Dress Contest at DAR Cotton Event

Joan Nollen and Celia Harvey won the DAR Cotton Dress Contest sponsored by the local DAR Chapter for 4-H girls. Judges were Mrs Murry Applegate Mrs Floyd Davis and Mrs Bill Casey. Joan Nollen and Celia Harvey will take their dresses to Des Moines for the state contest.

January Savings Bond Sales Rise in Marion County

Towans continued heavy investment in series E and H savings bonds during January, totaling 25,229,729 dollars, up nearly four million from January 1954 and the highest since 1949. Marion county chairmen E. L. Job of Knoxville and P. H. Kuyper of Pella noted Iowa reached 15.5 percent of quota.

In Marion County during January purchases of E and H savings bonds totaled $250,920.17.10 percent of the 1955 quota was reached, with co chairmen noting the county is above the state average and urging continued purchases to exceed the year’s goals. Nearby counties show Mahaska at $204,456.15.13 percent and Jasper at $3,386,189.15.17 percent.

Pella Freshmen-Sophs Capture South Central Conference Title

The Pella High freshmen-sophomore basketball team finished 15-5, winning the South Central Conference with a 9-1 record. Jim Ruth coached a balanced squad averaging 42 points while holding foes to 34. Top scorers included Jim Duffus with 194 points, Tom Best at 185, and Butch Sheppard with 179. Duffus led in scoring with 12.1 per game.

Winners Named In Mahaska Soil District Contest
