Soil Conservation Awards Honor Local Farmers in County
A 1946 soil conservation program in Osceola County awarded three handsome gold cups to outstanding farmers Bennie Binns Scott township first prize Louis Van Heukelom Black Oak second Horace Spott Hedge White Oak third. Hedge could not attend but cups were presented to Binns and Van Heukelom by Kiwanis president Lawrence Williams. Honorable mention went to Glenn Eveland Otto Vos and Kenneth Darland. Kiwanis A J Way introduced Williams and Howard Wilcox, with Cecil Smith district commissioner serving as toastmaster. Rotary officials from Marion and Wapello counties and Lyall Mitchell spoke on soil conservation studies in Mahaska county schools with eight top schools to receive awards in spring. George Pearson led singing.

Number of Club Calves Doubled in Marion County
Marion County 4-H calves on feed total 104 this year, up from 62 in 1946. Entries for 6 to 8 more are pending. The 104 comprise 22 Shorthorns, 40 Angus, and 42 Herefords. About 60 percent are owned by first year 4-H members. Worth Stevenson notes excellent calves grooming for county and state shows.

Will Pave No 14 In Lucas County
The Iowa Highway Commission plans an extension of paving on Highway 14 in Lucas County south of Chariton for the coming season with bids called for reinforced concrete box culverts extensions a 100 ft by 26 ft deck plate girder bridge grading over 5.3 miles between Wayne county line and Chariton and bids for 2.39 miles south of Chariton plus 6.13 miles between Wayne county line and Chariton. Grading bids are also sought on Highway 65 about 13 miles south of Highway 2 to the Missouri line and work on the uncompleted Highway 14 paving job south of Knoxville is expected to resume.
