Paving bids opened for city streets on Thursday
At a special city council meeting last week bids for paving about fifty blocks were opened from nine bidders. Bids ranged from 3.25 for concrete to over 5 for bitulithic with vitrified brick paving chosen for a three inch wearing surface on a four inch concrete base by J. C. Blunk of Ottumwa. Local firm Pella Construction Co. bid concrete but was rejected. Horrabin Co. noted for prior bitulithic work was also represented. Work may start in spring and finish in summer, extending paving along Main Street, Oskaloosa, East First, Broadway, West First, and related streets, with uncertainty on extending to additional streets not in the current district.
