Eight new smallpox cases were reported in Boston. Five were children with no vaccination history. Three were men aged 35 to 55 who had not been vaccinated since childhood. In a separate note, France is often seen as the glove capital, but Germany employs over 1,100 glove makers, the most in Europe.
Thomas A. Walker of Harden county Iowa arrived in New York City in 1838 with only 24 cents and still possesses the exact amount as a valued heirloom for his descendants.
