In Albia an advertised store auction stalled when officials warned enforcement of a strict ordinance on shipped in merchandise and licensing. The dispute centered on lease requirements. Dickey on East Second Street burned to the ground about midnight Saturday. Fire blamed on a defective flue. Harry and Blanche Breen discovered the blaze and roused Mr Dickey. Mrs Dickey was away caring for her ill daughter. House and contents valued at 9000 dollars. two thirds saved. partially insured. Hose could not reach. crowd gathered. efforts limited to saving furniture.
Ottercreek township residents R. Anderson and C. R. Boston faced J. C. Graham Centerville deputy game warden and Justice J. H. Hickman after digging for bearing animals. They pled guilty, were fined twenty five dollars each plus costs, but the fine was suspended on the warden’s recommendation.
Al Liechti of Sigourney was found not guilty of manslaughter by a Washington County jury after about seven hours of deliberation. The verdict relates to the death of Robert Ruth, the small son of Glen and Mrs. Ruth, who was struck by Liechti’s car last July. About thirty witnesses testified, including Rex Shimmin, an eyewitness brought back from California.
Clarence Peterson Lovilia motorcycle officer was seriously injured when his bike left the highway in north Lovilia. He was unconscious at the scene and transported to Albia hospital by Zimmerman's ambulance. No bones were broken but he remained unconscious until late.
A dramatic dash to Arizona for two ill boys ends when the younger, 24 year old Leland Jones, suffers a sudden fatal hemorrhage at Bates hotel in Chariton and dies at Yocom's hospital. Older brother Chas Carl Jones, 21, from McLeansboro Illinois, continues toward the climate seeker's destination.
J W Jarnigan a 78 year old veteran newspaper man and former Monroe resident is confined to his home at 1046 22nd street Des Moines after a fall. He also suffered a heart attack last Thursday and is slowly recovering. He spent boyhood in Monroe and once published a newspaper at Siontezuma and Cedar Falls becoming a longtime correspondent for 70 Iowa newspapers.
Cleo Thomas of Long Beach California died January 17 1932 in Seymour in his store rear where his wife found him at about seven. A note said he had been told by his doctor he could not live long and chose to end it all leaving wife and two daughters. He was buried in Los Angeles.
A Delta area house narrowly escaped disaster when a stove draft was left open. George Schoonover's home, five miles southwest of Delta, filled with smoke Sunday morning until Blanche Blom alerted neighbors. The family returned to find the fire under control after residents entered the building.
Alfred Luck and son Val traveled to Minneapolis where Mr Luck's brother John lies in serious condition at Minneapolis General Hospital after an auto crash on December 26. Two children Shirley aged 3 and Robert seven months died when the car was crushed between streetcars. Luck sustained multiple injuries and fractures, while Mrs Luck suffered hip dislocations and another child Geraldine aged 2 broke a leg. Three others remain hospitalized with uncertain prognosis.
Keokuk County News reports the death of Superintendent W C Moser, longtime Keota schools head last year, known as Bill. He was fatally injured in an Illinois crash near Dixson and his body will be sent to Keota for burial. He leaves two children, Martha 12, Billie 10, and his wife.
Two carloads of corn from Pella Iowa are being distributed today to feed needy farmers in Charles Mix county South Dakota. The relief, organized by Dutch Reformed and Christian Reformed churches of Pella, is distributed through Corsica Grand View Aurora Center New Holland Harrison and Platte. Ten to twenty bushels per farmer will be given to stem livestock hunger and prevent horse losses through winter. Committees from the Pella churches oversee distribution with help from Platte community club and Lake Andes Geddes Wagner commercial clubs.
