How Dr. Conwell Became a Minister
The Rev. Russell H. Conwell of Philadelphia, founder of Temple University, died at 82 after a long illness. His rise from a Boston real estate agent to a minister began when a Lexington church needed help. He preached their first service after repairing the cellar steps, raised funds to fix the church, and ultimately led to his ordination as a Baptist minister. His life blended lecturing, authorship, philanthropy, and public service.
