Pella on the way up and readers urged to comment

A policy statement explains the newspaper will present multiple sides on important issues and invites reader opinions on pages published, noting editorials may be edited to fit space and standards. It emphasizes contributors must sign and that all opinions are not necessarily those of the paper.

Year of Progress in Pella Reflects Growth and Plans

Pella reports a busy year of construction and upgrades including a new $500,000 church sanctuary and educational building, a modern high school replacing the burned facility, and a forthcoming theatre. About 30-40 new homes were built and many are occupied while Fair Haven saw elevator work and remodeling. Over 60 blocks of paving improved transit and development. The Chamber of Commerce hired a full-time manager, Red Rock Dam stages I and II completed with stage III let, and historic sites were developed into a potential tourist area. Dutch-styled storefronts spread, aided by Rosscreen’s $400 per building design grant. A new steam generator boosts city power. Pella looks to further growth next year with continued education, culture, and business expansion.

Study for Poverty Program Sparks County Resistance in Iowa

Iowa counties resist a federal poverty study, arguing they can better handle needs without federal funds. They already run welfare organizations, and a $25 to $30 thousand grant for studying poverty seems wasteful. They urge supporting existing units to expand efforts, reducing administration and speed aid to those in need.
