Iowa farmers spend over six million dollars yearly on fence posts replaced in fences. Creosoting can extend life of cottonwood willow and soft maple posts to 20 years or more, with careful bark removal and thorough seasoning. Treating round posts is preferred. cost about 15 to 20 cents per post at creosote prices. Enhanced life from 3-4 to 20 years noted.
