Strange Horse Disease Reported In Lucas County
A frequently fatal horse illness alarmed Lucas County farms, reported by Chariton veterinarian Dr H L Stewart. The disease’s cause is unknown and possibly climate related after a hot dry summer in 1936. Observations note many horse deaths in northern Iowa linked to mouldy stunted corn and husking practices, with abdominal pain weakness and stiffened legs in affected animals.

Disease in Horses Linked to Straw Fodder At Iowa State

Newton Hunters Bay Big Timber Wolf
A huge timber wolf believed to be among the largest killed in the county this season was bagged by Miley Gregory of Newton while hunting with Leon Eaton. After following tracks for about thirty minutes they shot the wolf on the Elmer Starret farm east of Newton on Highway No. 66. The pelt measured nearly six feet tip to tip and, besides a $5 county bounty, Gregory expects top price for the catch as Newton fur dealers have no quoted price yet.

Farmer Dies in Cave In While Skunk Digging Near Decatur
Bert Miller a 36 year old farmer living eleven miles west of Leon was killed instantly Sunday afternoon in a cave in while digging out skunks in a bank fifteen feet deep three miles southeast of Decatur. Joe Deemer and two sons worked over an hour to free him before help arrived.

Cave-in rescue ends with Miller’s suffocation death
Discovered by Deemer and his sons, Miller’s body was removed three hours after the cave-in. Coroner M. W. Rogers ruled death due to suffocation amid the tunnel collapse.
