In 1926 Government Highway officials tested pavements to find the best value. They used heavy trucks on a 2% inch vitrified brick pavement to measure durability and cost efficiency.
Trucks weighing 7 percent tons operated with heavy steel chains. After six months, 62,200 trips were logged and officials concluded the pavement would outlast normal wear, equivalent to forty four years of average street traffic. The brick surface remained excellent and cheaper than older brick types, prompting government engineers to recommend its use wherever long lasting pavement is needed.
